Intellectual Concepts (IC), in support of the CDC, is dedicated to ensuring that the global polio eradication battle is won. IC has deployed highly qualified expert Polio Field Support Officers (FSOs) to support the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in WHO African and WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regions. In these regions, IC FSOs, in support of CDC, work alongside partner organizations such as the WHO, MoH, and UNICEF, to build in-country immunization support and infrastructure, coordinate immunization activities, educate communities and ultimately eradicate polio.  IC’s global support includes the four pillars of polio eradication:

  • Routine Immunizations
  • Supplemental Immunization Activity
  • Acute Flaccid Paralysis Surveillance
  • Outbreak Response

ROUTINE IMMUNIZATIONS

It is our goal to have every child in developing nations receive the polio vaccination before his/her first birthday to rid the world of polio. IC provides routine immunization support programs in developing countries/regions such as Nigeria, Cameroon, Pakistan, Iraq, and Southeast Asia. We train social mobilizers and vaccinators on how to sensitize the populations to minimize vaccination refusals.

SUPPLEMENTAL IMMUNIZATION ACTIVITY

IC’s Field Support Officers assist countries with organizing immunization efforts across large areas (including hard to reach areas), contributing to the second pillar of polio eradication—supplemental immunization activity. Our FSOs have also improved immunization data collection and are assisting public health districts/areas/countries with attaining and sustaining certification-standard AFP surveillance. Certification is only granted when a country/area demonstrates the absence of polio for three consecutive years.

OUTBREAK RESPONSE

IC’s FSOs implement and maintain certification-standard AFP surveillance systems with outbreak response capabilities globally. During outbreak response, IC selects and trains health workers, and supervises outbreak response preparations in an outbreak area. IC also coordinates resources in infected areas using both bOPV and IPV to reduce chances of future outbreak.

ACUTE FLACID PARALYSIS (AFP) SURVEILLANCE

IC has extensive experience in AFP Surveillance—the global gold standard for detecting cases of polio. Working with our partners, we find and report children with AFP, and put plans in place to ensure that samples are transported properly for analysis.

In the first quarter of 2016, IC FSO working closely with the WHO and other GPEI partners in Cameroon, coordinated the polio vaccination of more than 12 million children and successfully supported the “Switch”.
